DPR Announces Independence Day Weekend and Furlough Day Schedule

 

This announcement comes to us from DC Department of Parks and Recreation:

The DC Department of Parks and Recreation (DPR) has announced the following schedule in observance of the Independence Day holiday weekend and furlough day on Monday, July 4, 2011.

Recreation and Community Centers
All DPR recreation centers will be closed on Monday, July 4.
DPR summer camps will not be in session on Monday, July 4.

Pools and Spray Parks
All DPR outdoor and indoor swimming pools will follow their normal schedule on Saturday, July 2 and Sunday, July 3, 2011.

On Monday, July 4th, all indoor aquatic facilities will be closed. 7 outdoor pools will be open 12:00 pm – 6:00 pm, (list below).

Registration is now open for the summer season of DC Bocce!  Bocce is a great recreational sport, that can be easily enjoyed by people of all ages, genders, and skill sets equally.   And the fun doesnt stop on the field, the league has sponsored happy hours at a nearby bar, with food and drink specials, after each match.

DC Bocce is a fun outdoor summer activity. It really is the perfect mix of competition, networking, mingling and partying.

There are locations in Adams Morgan, Ballston, Capitol Hill, Columbia Heights & Dupont Circle.  Games are once a week and run from mid July to early September

DC Sail has combined the two for a perfect summer outing perfect for all ages! You can purchase tickets today for a one-of-a-kind sailing, sporting adventure. Your afternoon will begin with a sail aboard DC's only schooner, the American Spirit, docked at the Gangplank Marina on the Southwest Waterfront. Pack a picnic and bring some beer or wine to enjoy while sailing past our nation's monuments and memorials down to Old Town Alexandria. Return to the dock right in time for the game. Grab your mitt because DC Sail will provide you with tickets for a great night of baseball just a short walk away at the Nat's stadium!

Cruises depart from the Gangplank Marina promtly at 3:00 pm, so be sure to arrive a bit early. Nat's games start at  7:05 pm. Ticket price includes Schooner Sail and admission to the game.

Dedicated Wizards fans soon hope to find out if General Manager, Ernie Grunfeld, can find the big ticket in this years’ NBA Lottery. After receiving the sixth overall pick in the 2011-2012 NBA Draft, the Wizards will be looking to add depth to their perimeter and low post game. Circulating reports from draft experts have the Washington Wizards selecting Enes Kanter, a 6’11” Power Forward, out of The University of Kentucky. Kanter, who has a knack for dominating the boards, coupled with an extremely high basketball IQ, was permanently ineligible this season for receiving more than $33,000 in benefits, while playing for his Turkish club team, Fenerbahce.

May 9, 2011) Albert "AL-B" Hannemann, 18 year volleyball veteran and Professional Beach Champion has created The National Volleyball League (NVL), a domestic professional beach volleyball tournament series which will take place at 6 events across the United States this year.  The first stop on this journey will be in the nation's capital with charity events, volleyball clinics and an inaugural soiree to kick off its opening season.

 

D.C. Fitness Challenge To Tackle City's Obesity Epidemic

Washington, D.C. — Aimed at battling DC's alarming obesity rate, one of the highest in the country, on Saturday May 14, 2011 Project Fitness Community and WIAS (Wellness In American Schools) will host the second annual DC Fitness Challenge. The event will take place at McKinley Technology High School, located at 151 T Street, Northeast, D.C., from 10 a.m.—2 p.m.

The DC Fitness Challenge is a community-focused health and fitness competition designed to help combat the city's overweight and obesity crisis through encouraging local communities to get active and fit. The Challenge began last year as a way to motivate fitness enthusiasts to reach back into their communities and inspire young people to get involved in health and fitness activities. Through friendly competition, participants motivate future generations to start their fitness journey.
